What are the short-term and long-term side effects of thyroid surgery?

As long as there were no complications during thyroid or parathyroid surgery or damage to the nerves, there should be no long-term complications with a patient’s vocal cords or voice.

Depending on the viability of the parathyroid glands following surgery, a patient may or may not need calcium supplementation temporarily or for the rest of their life (which is rare).

If a patient has thyroid cancer, close follow-up with an endocrinologist is highly recommended. Any patient with thyroid cancer should see an endocrinologist after surgery and will have careful surveillance for the rest of their life to watch for thyroid cancer recurrence.

If a patient has a thyroid cancer recurrence, then they would need to see Dr. Kroeker again for further revisional surgery.
