Are there any restrictions following thyroid or parathyroid surgery?

There are not many restrictions before or after thyroid or parathyroid surgery. A couple of things to remember for the first week following the operation are:

  • Patients should have no strenuous activity for the first week following surgery
  • No lifting more than 15-pounds for the first week
  • No driving for one week, secondary to lack of full range of motion in the neck

After the first week, there are no restrictions, apart from keeping the incision completely out of the sun for the first three months following the operation and keeping it nice and soft with either silicone strips or an emollient lotion.
