Will I have an increase risk of scarring if I am an African American or have dark complexion?

African Americans, typically, will have an increased risk of scarring. Dr. Kroeker will always advise African American men and women that they can keloid, which is when an area of irregular fibrous tissue forms at the site of a scar or injury. This can lead to really bad scarring.

Some people will keloid and others will not, but Dr. Kroeker always warns patients with darker complexion that they are at higher risk to keloid following surgery. For these patients, proper care of the incision becomes even more important in the weeks and months following thyroid or parathyroid surgery.
