How will I be evaluated prior to the operation?

During your initial consultation with Dr. Kroeker she will spend 30-45 minutes with you going over your full history. She will also examine your neck, look at your vocal cords with flexible laryngoscopy, and she will perform a very thorough head and neck ultrasound of your thyroid and lateral neck to fully evaluate any thyroid nodule and make sure there are no abnormal lymph nodes in the lateral neck. If there are signs of metastatic disease (abnormal appearing lymph nodes in the lateral neck), it can completely change the type of surgery needed.

During this first consultation, if Dr. Kroeker sees a thyroid nodule or an abnormal lymph node in the neck that meets criteria for a biopsy, then she will perform an ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration that same day. This is performed using a local anesthetic.

Dr. Kroeker usually has the results from a biopsy within two days and will call you directly with those results. Following the biopsy results, Dr. Kroeker will be able to recommend surveillance thyroid ultrasounds versus surgery.
